How hard is the language requirement?

Let's say I want to start taking a language that I didn't take in high school. Usually, how many semesters will it take to meet the req? 3? 4? And is it known to be a gpa killer?

Which school are you interested in? It is different for the college and SFS.

For most schools, I think the requirement is 2 terms, but I don’t know about GT. GPA killer? Depends, lol. If you pick up languages well, I would think not. I’m assuming they’d be the basic classes, which, I would think, would be quite simple.

I’m in AP Spanish and our teacher said that we should test into at least a 300 lv class. Hm. That’s scares me haha. 100s and 200s would be simple, I think. Basic grammar.

You might want to keep in mind what kind of degree you want - from my experience, a BA takes more language than a BS.

So true! The requirements from the college and SFS are quite different. Just to give you an idea of what you might expect from the language courses… I’m in the SFS and reached proficiency in Spanish. I’d taken 6 years of Spanish from native speakers (Uruguay/Mexico/Spain) from MS thru HS and easily made nothing but A’s. I received my first B’s at Georgetown. The language programs are outstanding and rigorous, even for those who have an ear for languages and an eye for the details of linguistics. Since I reached proficiency in Spanish, I’ve started Intensive Russian and have been told it can take up to 6 semesters to reach proficiency. If you are not looking to apply to the SFS, the number of language courses would vary depending on the language.

Here is some interesting info…

"All students in the College must achieve proficiency in a language (ancient or modern) through the intermediate level. During New Student Orientation, placement exams are offered in most languages. Students who do not place above the intermediate level of a language must fulfill the requirement by completing language coursework through the intermediate level. Please note that the number of courses required varies depending on the language family* and the intensity of instruction.

*In general, students must complete through the 12th credit of an Indo-European language or the 24th credit of other languages. Please see “exit course” below.

Students are strongly urged to complete the language requirement no later than the end of their sophomore year."

Does anyone have any insight on the language requirements for MSB?

Lol, I guess I was just curious about this since language was my worst subject all three years, so the less of it in college I take, the better. Also, I’m applying to the College as a math major.
