My orientation is the 27th and I'll be taking the MAE test. I was looking through some of the practice problems and I don't remember much and have a feeling that I may not do well on the test. What happens if I fail it? I will be majoring in computer engineering by the way.

worst that can happen is that they place you in math8, which is trig. then you complete that series and move on to calculus. as a ce, you will be expected to be on top of your math skills. Welcome to BCOE btw!

Good luck!

If I fail the test will I have to spend an entire year in math8 or just one quarter?

just a quarter

each class only lasts one quarter

I heard something about having to take things over at the local community college if you don’t pass the MAE. Is that true?

For majors that require calculus (the Math 9 sequence), such as any major in the Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) and the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS), students must receive a minimum score on the MAE for placement into Math 8A. If a student scores below the minimum, he/she must take an Intermediate Algebra course at a local Community College to prepare them for university-level work in mathematics. Upon verification of successful completion of Community College coursework, students will be permitted to enroll in Math 8A. Transcripts showing proof of completing a Intermediate Algebra course with a C or higher must be submitted to Vincent Norga at the Learning Center.

the chances of you scoring that low is pretty low itself… so just think of math8 as the worst that can happen, lol.

what’s the highest math class youve taken in highschool and how long ago?

I took pre-calc senior year of high school so I hope I’m ready. I haven’t looked at a single math problem since summer though.

yea you should be fine. I had a friend skipping math senior year and got into math 8

I did score really low on the MAE and they said I have to go to the cc for a math class, but im a pre-business major so why do i have to take the cc class if im not in BCOE or CNAS? i did horribly bad on the test though, no math my senior year, is it just because i did way worse than i should have?

Wow dude, that sucks. Might be that the fact that you did not take math senior year, and whatever amount of math you might have taken before (im guessing at least precal) might not have really interested you nor stuck around in you head. Not trying to put you down, we are all bad at something or another. As a business major, youre going to need math buddy! prebuz gets their own kind of math classes instead of taking calculus and all the other maths, so dont worry, you get the easy math classes - which the cnas n bcoe students will make fun of lol sorry but its true, but its better for you because its no where nearly as complicated as the math09 series and math10 and math46. in the world of business and econ, you are going to need more stats than calculus anyway.

ya i’ve never been that good in math, more of an english person. but am i still supposed to take the cc class or is it a mistake? abre1200’s post has the info that i read on the ucr site and it only mentions that cnas and bcoe people have to take the cc course if they dont do well on the MAE. and as you said, pre-business doesn’t need calc so im confused as to why they dont just put me in the lowest ucr math. unless i scored too low for that as well…

call up the chass advising center, or ucr’s admissions. it might be that you need to take the cc class to get into the business math classes.

oh, btw, there is Math022…
MATH 022 Calculus for Business, 5 units, Lecture, 3 hours; discussion, 2 hours. “Prerequisite(s): a sufficiently high score on the placement examination, as determined by the Mathematics Department, or MATH 004 with a grade of ““C-”” or better or MATH 005 with a grade of ““C-”” or better or MATH 008A with a grade of ““C-”” or better or MATH”

Explores relations and functions (linear, polynomial, logarithmic, and exponential), differential calculus of functions of one and two variables, and integration (indefinite and definite) with applications to business and economic problems. “Credit is not awarded for MATH 022 if a grade of ““C-”” or better has already been awarded for MATH 008B, MATH 009A, or MATH 09HA.”

uhg, but sci and engr majors look at this as a joke compare to the calculus they have to do… lol but just the right amount for an undergrad bus major

Does anyone know:
- How hard the MAE for UC Riverside is
- What the possible math classes available are
- What score you need to get in order to get into each class
- What topics are covered (specifically, not just pre-calc and algebra 2)
Thanks! :D
