I am out of state, and my mom thinks that ucb could be a safety/target for me. My understanding was that UCB OOS was kinda hard to get into.

I'm pretty sure UCB is a reach for anyone OOS...

Berkeley in-state is hard, though in some cases is easier (or seems so). Berkeley isn't a safety for anyone anymore, not even in-staters. It's difficult to say that Berkeley is a match for someone OOS.

Berkeley is much harder to get into OOS than in state

Cal OOS is almost impossible, as with all publics. Think Ivey's competitiveness....

^^ that isn't the case with all publics. University of Michigan, for example, is 1/3 OOS.

in-state is piece of cake if you're not dumb.

out-of-state is arguably as hard as places like Emory, Carnegie Mellon, or perhaps even Cornell (for int'l students)

^^ it's far from a piece of cake. In comparison to the vast majority of universities, it's considered 'most selective.'

And OOS is oftentimes something like Stanford, etc. Very, very competitive.

In state UCB is easy to get into if you're smart..

OOS is about the same competitiveness as the tier just under HYPSM.

just make sure yo're not an idiot, and in-state would be easy.

In-state admission is DEFINTELY not easy. It might not be impossible, but it isn't easy by any means. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Out-of-state admission is on par with Stanford and Ivies.

lol how easy is eas anway?

just get good grades and good test scores and some ecs and you're in.
just dont be an idiot and do something stupid.

out-of-state or international admissions may be in par w/ Stanford and ivies and duke.

In-state = relatively easy
out-of-state = harder

"In-state = relatively easy"

What? "Relatively" in this case would be "relative to other universities." Relative to the 4,000+ colleges in the country, it is one of the hardest. Obviously not as hard as Stanford or Harvard, but very difficult. I forget its selectivity ranking in US News, but it was in the top 20 -- classified as "most difficult."

(I swear, people here at CC are so hardened...)

OOS is like 20% acceptance

if you like to compare each college w/ the other 4000 colleges, then technically anything in the top 2000 is "selective" since beats half of the schools.

lol

berkeley is EASY for non-idiots/

Very difficult. Even 2200+ in SAT and 2360 in subject tests, with stellar GPA are not adequate, esp.for admission to the undergraduate engineering program:)

"if you like to compare each college w/ the other 4000 colleges, then technically anything in the top 2000 is "selective" since beats half of the schools."

No -- you're assuming that the top 2000 are more selective. The fact is, many colleges that one might deem "better" aren't in fact more selective than others (U Michigan, for example).

And even for non-idiots, Berkeley is a bit of hurdle.

i have to agree with the spring admit thing, i think getting in was pretty easy for non-idiots. surviving might be another story.

they sure are arrogant.
