How competitive a major is IR to get into?

my interviewer told me yesterday that he has hardly any fond memories of penn because he was always studying. i'm scared now.

That's his own doing. If you choose to study all the time, then you're only creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Plenty of people here at Penn study but also know how to have fun.

Penn grad from a long time ago. Never went to a party, don't drink. Studied butt off to attain appropriate GPA for med school. Have wonderful memories- found my niche in the music dept. and with non-drunk friends. Don't expect to cruise and cram/write papers the night before.

au contraire! ( lol, I don't even kno if that's how you write it. I'm a german guy, not french. gahh french). Cramming is definitely possible...it might not work lol, but it's better than nothing

better than losing two world wars

hahah...touche.

I know plenty of people who don’t study at all and pull off 3.7+ GPAs every semester. They also have godlike intelligence and understand everything thrown at them.

I’m in engineering+wharton, and it’s killing me. I’m only in my second semester freshman year, and I’m studying a lot just to keep up. It really depends on how smart you are though.

In general, most CAS classes are easier, with the exception of the introductory math and economics classes. Once you get past Econ 1/2, Math 104/114/(and sometimes 240 depending if you’re taking it), you’ll be fine in the college.

Wharton and Engineering never really let up though. I can totally relate to that interviewer who said he was studying all the time.

It’s easy enough to Sandusky the younger children.

as a penn16er, how does a freshman even know where to start with course selection? i’m potentially interested in premed, IR, econ/finance (wuth potential interest to transfer into wharteon - i’m in the college), journalism, and - for hobby’s sake - creative writing. if i dont want my bum handed to me 1st semester in, how should i plan for my frosh year?

^ Over the summer, you’ll be assigned a Pre-Major Advisor from the College who will help you with course selection:

Your interests sound exactly like mine! I swear it could’ve been me who wrote your post

I’m definitely going to be haranguing my pre-major advisor. My mom doesn’t think going into IR will ER me a job. For her, it’s pre-med or bust.

@nebbalish

even more cray cray is that my mom doesnt want me to do IR either (for the same reason) and wants me to become a doctor too! small world.
