i'm looking at doing engineering, with business as a backup. if i dont like engineering, how soon can i transfer to business/BHP. do they look only at your college grades/ECs or do they look at high school stuff as well? do they also take into account what college you're transferring from (such as a student in college of engineering would have a better chance of getting in than someone from college of communications, or would an engineer's lower GPA be a factor?) thanks.

You can transfer to the business school and BHP after your freshman year. They only consider your college courses and college grades. Extra curricular activities from college are considered as well, but not from high school.

They don't really take into account where you are transferring from. They do look to see if you completed the four indicator courses, which are Micro and Macroeconomics, along with Calculus I and II. If you have all four done (only 2 are required to be done, one of which must be Calculus I), then you have a little bit of an advantage.

The main factor is your college GPA and if that is not up to par, things like what courses you took or what college you are transferring from won't even be considered. Those factors are weighed into the decision only if you are a borderline applicant and they are trying to choose between two students. It is tough to transfer from the College of Engineering, but I know a friend who did it. If you are a Texas resident and keep atleast a 3.6 GPA, you will probably get in as a transfer.

I think 30% of BHP spots each fall are reserved for within-UT transfers. Most of these transfers come from McCombs students who weren't in BHP their freshman year who want to be admitted, but I believe a few of them are from other colleges.

I'd try it the other way around, as freshman engineering courses are probably not going to help your GPA, whereas the introductory business courses won't be as bad (IMO).
