How hard will taking 7 AP classes be?

I'm a junior, currently taking 4 AP classes.
I have a high A in all classes, with minimal workload at home (other than projects that seem to pile up when I procrastinate).

I've just signed up for 7 AP classes for my senior year (out of 7 total periods).

My friends and some teachers (surprisingly) keep on telling me that it'd be impossible and that I'm going to "die" by the end of the year with a "B" in all of the classes.

As for my self, I'm 95% positive that I can maintain an "A" and have a little resting time at home.

My question is.

For those of you who have taken ALL AP classes, how hard is it?
I have until end of the year to make any changes.
Do you recommend this?

I know that colleges look at your senior year course load (more challenging the better) and
that what I get in these classes matter A LOT.

So for those of you who have walked this path previously, do you mind sharing some of your experience/knowledge with me?

I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

I know class difficulty varies from school to school. Generally, how hard would it be/was it? Is my question.

if you’re able to manage 4 AP classes that easily at your school, 7 should be fine. usually I’ld say that 7 is way too many, but if you have so little work with 4 APs you should be fine

Which AP classes are they? In general, 7 is obviously going to be a lot to handle. But, certain ones are undoubtedly easier than others.

Each school has a different curiculum. Doing 7 APs in a rigorous private high school might seem impossible, but doing 7 APs in a more laidback public school is much more possible. If you say you’re doing fine in your current courses, I’d say it’s possible.

I ended up taking 7 (4 selfed tho) last year. The work wasn’t hard (but remember 4 of them were on my own terms). Late April I really cracked down on the studying. I’d say a spent about 10-12 hours on each of the self studied tests.

It was a little stressful, but a whole lot of fun.

I think you can handle it but it really depends on the teachers and workload. Some AP classes might even have less work than honors classes. This is the case with my AP chem class. We have about an hour of homework a week while the honors kids are incessantly bombarded with busy work. So 7 AP classes is definitely possible ( I will be taking 7 next year also) .

Thank you for your responses.
I feel much better about my choices now.

The courses I’ll be taking are AP Calc, AP Physics, AP Bio, AP Econ, AP Gov, AP Spanish, and AP Lit.

From what I’ve heard, AP Econ, AP Gov, and AP Spanish is just like a honour’s class.

As for AP Calc, my friend who doubled up on math ended up with a 95, so I think I’d do fine. The only thing is the teacher is going to change next year…

How hard is AP Physics and AP Lit?

Thank you guys once again.

Yesterday, I got a huge speech about this from my Lit. teacher. AP Lit is supposedly harder than AP Lang, but if you took Honors Lit then AP Lit should be a breeze!

AP Econ and Gov are jokes. I’ve heard that the AP Spanish class isn’t too hard, but the AP exam is exceedingly difficult. AP Bio is a lot of work/studying/memorizing facts. Which AP Calc and Physics are you taking? Calc AB would be very doable with the rest of your classes, while BC might be more challenging. As for Physics, both B and C are a fair amount of work, but taken concurrently with calculus makes both much easier.

Which AP Calc, and which AP Physics?

Wow, I think you can handle it…what AP classes are you taking this year?

It’s not so bad. I’m taking six AP classes. Plus, I was testing for SAT/ACT and writing college/scholarship essays while I was at it.

I think the most important thing to remember when taking AP classes is not to let yourself fall apart mentally. It’s mentally hard, but if you can discipline your mind to be positive, then you should be fine. I have less than one hour of homework each night.

I wouldn’t take more than five.

Exactly what do you think you are accomplishing by taking seven?

You are risking overloading yourself with too much work.

The risks outweigh the benefits.

ECs are important too.

If you take too many APs, you will not be able to do much in the way of ECs.

In general, I believe in pushing yourself as much as possible, but in this case, I don’t really see the point.

Better to spend the time you save by eliminating two or three AP courses by studying for the SAT.

I’m gonna go with pretty hard.

Then again, if your selection is AP Calc, AP Physics, AP Bio, AP Econ, AP Gov, AP Spanish, and AP Lit, I can tell you right now that Spanish and Gov are blowoffs. IDK if you’re more math/sci or english, but Lit can’t be too bad. Might as well do it.

I’m taking 6 AP classes (Physics C, Calc BC, English, Euro, Psych, Bio), and it’s really not that bad. Everyone had all sorts of dire warnings about how I’d be swamped with work and stressed out of my mind and whatnot, but it’s been manageable. Difficult, but manageable. It all depends on your school, your work ethic, and your aptitude in the subjects you’re taking. I’d say if you’re doing fine with 4 APs you should be fine with 7, although be warned that filling out college applications can be really time consuming.

Just my 2 cents; if you think you can handle it, you probably can.

I was kinda wondering the same thing…

Is this too much: AP Calc AB, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP English Lit, APUSH? I haven’t taken ANY APs, so I kinda want to get a lot of them

Thank you for your replies.
In this school, they don’t have AP Calc BC or AP Physics BC (They just have AP Physics and AP Calc).
Hearing your stories really encourages me.
I will also take the warnings into account.

As for the ECs, I’m doing soccer, science club, math club, and Spanish club.
Also, I’m leading a school-wide election project.

From a scale of 1-10 (1 being easy and 10 being extremely difficult), how would you rate the following courses:

AP Calc BC:
AP Physics BC:
AP Spanish:
AP Lit:
AP Gov:
AP Econ:
AP Bio:

Again, I appreciate your help.
Have a nice day!

AP Calc BC - Varies as the year goes on. From 6-9
AP Physics C - 7
AP Spanish - I don’t have experience, can’t judge
AP Lit - 5-6 for difficulty, 7+ for workload (in my school anyway)
AP Gov - No experience, can’t judge
AP Econ - 2-4, depending on how well you understand the concepts
AP Bio - 7/8. There are quite a lot of topics to know.

@Dorkyelmo - I can’t imagine that taking Calc, Bio, and Chem all in one year would be fun at all. That sounds especially difficult, actually. USH can potentially be a lot of reading, as can Lit, depending on how its run in your school. So in general, your schedule sounds difficult. But a lot of it depends on your school. At mine, doing Bio+USH+Lit would have been an overload due to reading time required alone. Putting in the other two, which require practice to understand concepts, would have been waaaaaay too much for one year.

Wow, yeah, if you can manage 4 and have a very low workload, 7 shouldn’t be too bad. Good luck  Im taking 3 now, but I’m only a sophomore :stuck_out_tongue: does AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Psychology and AP Lang sound do-able for a busy junior? Oh, well, plus some dual enrollment classes. Anyone take Multivariable calculus or linear algebra + how was it???
