How hard would it be for me to get a Dep't of state internship?

Hey,

I'm a rising Junior at an Ivy. This summer I'm doing summer study abroad and the same internship I did last summer, which isn't an internship at all except the job title but it pays nice. I'm an excellent student (3.66 right now, maybe 3.7 after fall semester) doing a double major with only okay ec's.

My question is how hard is it to get a Dep't of State internship? I am an IR major and proficient in Italian so I was thinking about trying for the American embassy in Rome, but a job in Washington or elsewhere would also be great. I know those applications need to be in by November 1, but can one apply to multiple government positions, whether they all be in the State Dep't or across multiple Departments?

Also, when would one find that they were selected for one, when does one need to get back to them by, and what kind of things can one do to be more competitive?

Thanks.

You can apply to multiple positions, and if you get accepted to more than one, you can just send a letter saying that regretfully, you cannot accept the internship due to etc...

You can also apply to two locations within the State Department, but the Embassy positions are a little more difficult to obtain than the D.C. based internships.
