On the CommonApp, there is a place under Northwestern where they want you to list how you’ve learned about the Northwestern. The problem is that I’ve done literally none of the options they provide. I don’t want to lie because I’m pretty sure they track this kind of stuff, but I don’t want to leave it blank either.
what are the options listed? if there’s anything you can do within the next few days, do it! is there an ‘other’ option? if so, click it and just be honest about how you have learned about northwestern if you don’t want to leave it blank
How did you learn of and about Northwestern University ?
@asdfghjkl98 Half of them involve on-campus activities, which I definitely cannot do, while the other half has to do with meeting a Northwestern representative, which I can’t do either. It’s kind of ridiculous what they want there.
@Publisher My college counselor and word of mouth from my friends mostly as well as my own research online. To a lesser extent, they did send me e-mails and packages in the mail, but that wasn’t really a driving force in my decision.
Sorry, here is the list of options (some are summarized):
- I visited Northwestern’s campus in Evanston
- I participated in a campus tour and info session
- I attended a campus info session for an undergrad school
- I met with a Northwestern rep. during a local high school visit
- I attended an off-campus info session in my local area
- I met with a Northwestern representative at a college fair
The first 3 I can’t do at all. I live in Georgia, and my family can’t just up and travel on a whim to Illinois. The farthest we’ve gone is Duke, and that’s the farthest we can go for now. The 4th one is out of reach because the best school we’ve ever had visit our high school is the University of Georgia. Not even Georgia Tech reps have visited. Also, our college fairs are garbage. They’re held at the local community college, and the best we get is Georgia State or University of North Georgia. Also, their off-campus info sessions don’t come to Georiga (https://www.coasttocoasttour.org/). The closest they get is Kentucky, which is 7 hours away. I can’t drive 7 hours for a 2 hour information session. That’s just ridiculous.
Email Northwestern and ask them if they are coming into your area. Then email your regional Northwestern person for your school. This gives you contact with the person that will have a say in your acceptance. Also register on their site. These are contacts. Email a professor and ask questions. When you answer the “why” NW type of question you now have something to use like you researched their website, talked to a professor and regional person and so on.
