I was just wondering how anyone on CC who have been accepted already to Syracuse fared with financial aid. Does Syracuse usually tend to give good aid packages?
Also, with financial aid, does being a legacy with both my parents, my grandmother and my great uncle help?
Thanks!

I will be an incoming freshman at Syracuse this fall and I come from a middle-class family. I chose Syracuse mainly because they offered me $45,800 in grants and aid for the school year! They are fairly generous with aid packages and also very understanding with appeal letters asking for more help.

xcgirl, I am soo greatful with syracuse university. As jorgeisthename indicated, they were very generous with my daughters finaid package. That is why she is assisting there this fall. They were great at the interviews and so willing to help, that is why I’m know and so happy with her decision in accepting to study there.

as the two above me indicated, SU is very good about giving out financial aid. they’re even better about it if you’re a candidate they’re very interested in. Although the scholarships are only so-so, the likelihood that you’ll receive plenty of grant aid if you’re a very strong applicant is very high.

personally, i received $37k in grants, $7k in subsidized loans, and a work study with an EFC of 9k.

Do you guys know what the average amount of aid they give is.

I’m curious, for some reason if they accept me how much I would receive.

I come from a lower class family, my moms a single mom with no help from my father what so ever. And will the fact that I am half Spanish help me you think. My friend who is 100% African told me SU wanted her because she was African and they needed her.

@SYRACUSEBOUND, I am in the same situation as your family. single mother of 2, my oldest is autistic and my baby girl is attending syracuse this fall. but my daughter worked hard to maintain a 4.00 average and did great on her sats, and aps, so she got a terrific help from syracuse. I don’t receive any financial help from thefather of my kids neither from government, its all hard work from my end.

If your working hard to get to syracuse, you will be alright. Keep the good work.

@CMIRA003 Single parents have it hard especially when they have no help what so ever from the other parent. The difference between your daughter and me is that I am not as smart as her. My grades aren’t even close to being as good as hers. But you can tell me how the admissions part was for her? I’m a rising Junior and seriously considering Syracuse.

Well, as I mentioned, she worked hard for her grades and extracurricular clubs. Honor Student, her chapter of United Nations here in the Island, and voluntary work.
They came and interview her and she did well with that. So, yeah, she worked hard. And them when she got accepted, Syracuse offered her more money. So, here we are. waiting for fall for another chapter to be written in her life.

Its difficult but not impossible. Now that you are aware of what you need to do, get to work, do extra work, get involved in some way with these groups, eventhough you don’t get the grades to get into them, if you are really interested, maybe the teachers will see this and gives you a chance. Anything can happen, and I do believe in miracles. So get to work now that you have the time.

Ive read some here at college confidential a story of a student that finish school and got into great univiersities with good financial aid, but he was different, got his GAD? and then applied. If I can find this here, I will post it for you. Good luck.

Oh please do post it! I’d be very interested in reading it. And your right anything is possible. I play basketball and lacrosse. And this upcoming school year I hope to start my own Key Club. Out of curiosty where do you live? I noticed you said “here on the island.”

@ Syraacusebound - Hello, we live in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
If you are an athlete, hope you are really good, because my understanding is that they really appreciate their athletes.

Here is the story I was telling you about. Is a bit long, but its worth the read. Good luck.

Wow so lucky must be beautiful there! She might go into shock it’s a totally different view here. And to be honest I’m only good at sports sometimes. It’s an off and on type thing. I don’t have any confidence. Thanks for the article.

Well Syracusebound, it all up to you then. You are the only one limiting yourself. Its time to work on your academics and put extra effort on sports. You gotta work!!
You still have time to improve your grades. Its all in your attitude and in your head. So get to work kiddo. Only you can determine your future, only you my friend.
