Right now I'm a sophomore in high school, and throughout high school (so far) I've gotten straight A's. However, in middle school I took Honors Geometry and got a B. My unweighted cumulative GPA, including the B from middle school, is a 3.92, and my weighted GPA is a 4.42. If I continue to get straight A's in high school, how high do you think my unweighted GPA could be? I'm pretty upset about the B in geometry because I was just a stupid little kid in middle school and I did not even care about the class, so it sucks that it's bringing my GPA down like that :/ right now I take pretty challenging courses, have always been in honors classes and this year am taking two AP classes (biology and government). Is there any way for me to get my GPA all the way up to, I don't know, a 3.99 or even "erase" the geometry grade and get a 4.0?
Thanks for reading.

Relax and just try your best… And no, you can’t “erase” your geometry grade.

your GPA from middle school doesn’t go on your transcript i don’t think…

…People these days. First of all, middle school grades don’t even count. Second of all, you’re going crazy over a 3.99999 something.

Yeah even though I took some high school courses in middle school, my counselor said it doesn’t affect your GPA. For us it just appears on the transcript.

Your GPA won’t get you in, it’ll get you out. Focus on getting a lot of outstanding ECs and accomplishments instead of seeing if you can raise a 4.5 to a 4.51

I took honors geometry in 8th grade also. Had to go to the high school every day for my last class. And I finished with a B.

Hey, look at that! We’re twins!

And, twin, I’m here to tell you that you have no need to worry.

GPAs are always read in context. That context includes the rigor of the courseload relative to the available curriculum, the average GPA given by a particular school, etc.

In your case, you are going to be more than just fine. You are going to be marvelous.

Why?

a) The geometry class will likely not even appear on your transcript, but if it does it will surely appear in the year in which you took it. Honors Geom in 8th grade = points for rigor, even if you did get a B.

b) The fact that you finished that math course so early probably means you are continuing to take math courses ahead of schedule. So every year of your high school career, more points for rigor because you are ahead of the expected curriculum.

c) There’s a point of diminishing returns for GPAs and you are already beyond it. Your current GPA is high enough to get you auto-admitted at several top-25 public universities. It’s also high enough that any Ivy or other highly-selective school is not going to reject you on GPA alone; they’re going to read your entire application and make a holistic decision. So your time is better spent on developing good extracurriculars and a refreshing individual voice in your essay writing, than on chasing the 0.08 points between you and a 4.0UW.

So, relax. You are clearly a driven and high-achieving individual. You’re going to get into a great college, no doubt.

And the lesson you learn today may help you then, because if you spend your college career chasing the gap between 3.92 and 4.0, you will have the most miserable time anyone has ever had in college. Pursue excellence, yes…but pursue it not only in your grades but your whole life.
