How 'hippy' is Beloit?

My son is a pretty mainstream kind of kid, not preppy or hippy. We are wondering if Beloit would be too hippy for him?

Not exactly sure what ‘hippy’ (or ‘hippie’) means to you, but Beloit is considered a very good LAC where kids go to learn, grow, and develop critical thinking skills. I’d put it in the “caring and nurturing” category, but it isn’t sheltered, as they encourage “experiential learning”. The student body is probably left-of-center politically, but it isn’t radical by any means.

Of course, if this is one of the schools your son is considering, I expect he already knows something about Beloit which appeals to him. You might learn more by going to the Beloit forum on this website. And of course, if possible, you should visit the campus if it makes his list of finalists to get a better feel if it’s a good fit for him. Good luck!

Beloit is not “hippy” more then it is quirky. I met a huge range of people on my 2 overnights to Beloit and found Jocks, Preps, Nerds, Geeks, Hippies and everything in between. You would have to try hard NOT to fit in at beloit.

What I have been told by several clients in the area is that Beloit is pretty “hippy”.

But take SmallCollegesFTW advice and go for the campus visits.

The term is hippie not hippy.

I’m not northcarolinamom but I can tell this response is wholly unhelpful. I just thought I’d say it so that the OP doesn’t have to.

I visited Beloit and I got the impression that you absolutely don’t have to be at all a hippie or very artsy or liberal or whatever to fit in well, but you do have to recognize and be prepared for the fact that there will be some people there who do fit the hippie stereotype, outdated as it may be.

osucowboys:

I’m not sure what the point of your post is. If you want to offer helpful advice to northcarolinamom, that’s great. If you want to tell me what would make my post more informative so I can help northcarolinamom, that’s great. Otherwise, I’d leave it to northcarolinamom to judge how helpful it is to her. Life is a lot more pleasant for everyone when people don’t go around criticizing others for no good purpose.

I think teenage_cliche puts it best. You don’t have to be artsy or eclectic to fit in but you have to accept that kind of stuff.

Thanks everyone. We are looking for a college with all kinds of different people and not one predominant type where our son might not fit in. We have the same concerns about schools dominated by fraternities or any other one group. This is why we’re attracted to some of the midwestern schools. Based on the range of responses, it sounds like a great school with a diversity of students. Sorry for posting this question twice but I’m a newbie and wasn’t sure if the first one went through. And mea culpa on the misspelling of hippie!

I’m not quite sure about the student body since I only know 1 alum, but the city itself is pretty sketch :/

Knowitsome,

You should know now that I’m only here to be the world’s biggest *******. lol jk
