The Yale app asks how I became interested in Yale. Is this a loaded question, or do they actually want to say something like, "Read about it in a college book."
What are you guys writing?

I wrote the truth: my friend's sister applied and told me how great it was. (she was later rejected and is attending dart). I'm applying RD and not sure if even applying...but I filled it out anyways

Don't worry too much about this question - it's not loaded- they're just interested in how you came to see yourself at the school.
My D, a junior now, said how much she liked the tour guide (he was this really funny and attractive guy) and how much the students in general had impressed her. Kind of a lame answer, I thought, but it was fine.

i said that the state rocks, as cliche as it may be.

I told them that was inexplicably attracted simply because of the libraries... I <3 Sterling, Beinecke, & the Davenbrary! (sorry, the Davenport Library. Each of the colleges has its own library, and I've decided that ours is just about my favorite place on earth... well, maybe not quite, because Sterling & Beinecke beat it out, but it's a pretty cool place and a damn good place to study :D)

I wrote the honest truth too, and it's kind of funny/strange. One of my sisters friends was at Yale for his freshman year and transferred to Columbia (this was before I was interested in the school, obviously). When I asked him what caused him to transfer, every little thing he disliked about the school were things that I would love in a school, and the more he ranted about how bad the school was (for about an hour and a half, actually), the more I became fascinated with the school. True story.
