hi
iam taking the sat this june and my CR score is so bad
what should i do? I can study as much as needed
should i read books or anything? Time is the main problem,i find the short passage tricky and make several mistakes on the sentence completion . i am not a native speaker.:((. omg iam freaking out pls help .what should i do?
Hi @whateverhahah! How have you been preparing so far for the critical reading section? I would recommend practicing SAT exams to get better at taking the critical reading section. At this point, reading books is more of a longer-term pursuit, so taking practice exams will probably help you more. Do you have an example of a short passage you are having trouble with? If you are having time trouble, you may practice with extended time first to ensure you are answering the questions to the best of your ability. I would go through old CR sections and practice those in the Official SAT Study Guide, Kaplan, Princeton Review, and other sources to get a better feel for the CR section. Please let me know how I may help. Have a great day, and don’t worry about it so much!
@Apoc314 My CR score is 620 and that is from January, I want to get it to 650 for the May SAT, is that possible? I do practice and I always do the SAT QOTD. How many more questions right is it from a 620 to a 650?
@jdschooled5 , it is certainly possible. I think it is only 2-3 more questions right for a 650 from a 620. How do you currently practice? I would recommend focusing on practicing individual CR sections of the SAT from the Official SAT Study Guide (and then Kaplan, Princeton Review, and other books if you run out of practice exams) to hone your skills. Are you mostly having trouble with time or with understanding certain parts of the passages? Please let me know how I may help, and thanks for reading the guide!
hi,
i will be taking sat this may, again in oct, and the last one in dec. I m currently gaining in low 600s, and that too without time, and plan to raise my score for this may to low 700s - high 600s. Do u think thats possible ? I have been practicing for a while now but there is not much improvement in my score and i keep getting same type of mistakes again and again. How many hours do u think should i study ? Also, I m planning for a near 800 till December as i will be having my whole summer vacation. Is that possible and is there any strategy or something i should follow that will help me to improve the cr score ? n can i get ur email or smthng so that i may contact u plz ? ( if thats ok with u )
thank you. ( I really appreciate you helping people, thanks agn )
Hi @AyeshaRashid011 . I would say that that is definitely possible. What kind of mistakes do you tend to make on the critical reading section? Are there lack of understanding mistakes, sentence completion ones, missing the big picture mistakes, etc? One of my biggest tips would be to use Advice #9 to play devil’s advocate. It is basically looking at an answer choice and asking yourself why it is wrong - if there is no direct passage evidence for an answer choice, it is WRONG. Please let me know which types of questions give you more difficulty, and I will do my best to help you understand the answers to those types better. Thanks for asking!
Hey I have basically 12 days until the sat and I am set on spending 2 or wore hours a day till then practicing. Whats the most efficient way of doing this?
I want to raise my others from flat 600 but CR is what’s getting me. Of course mostly the passages, and specifically general purpose which refer to more broad aspects of the passage(s), like what would author 1 disagree with or what is the main rhetorical device used or technique used.
Thanks
@Eenrique710 , I would advise spending most of your time on the critical reading section (40-30-30 if you want to focus more on CR).
For more broad purpose questions, I advise skimming through the long/short passage(s) and writing (or thinking) a brief summary of the author’s main point before looking at the answer choices for what author 1 would disagree with or what their purpose is, etc. You may also underline rhetorical devices/techniques used if any are repeated throughout the passage before looking at the question in that circumstance. I usually advise skimming the passages and going to the questions to determine which sections of the passage to concentrate on reading and then answering the questions. I’m assuming you are doing well with time and are focusing on understanding the passages more, right? If you have an example passage and question(s), I’m more than happy to help you understand the answer. Hope this advice helps, and thanks for reading my guide!
actually time usually tends to be an issue because the way I read passages is kind of inefficient; I don’t know what the best strategy is for different types of passages whether to skim etc. However I used this strategy you just mentioned, of not reading the passage but looking at the questions that focus on specific lines in the passage and doing those first. it turns out I actually end up getting much of the passage by doing those questions first.
@Apoc314 I notice that everyone who gets high scores practice alot on practice tests. Which is the best book to do these practice tests in? The blue book only has 10 practice tests, so where do i go from if i want to find practice tests as legit as those?
Hey @Apoc314 I was reading your story and its really inspirational. I had a question, I got a 520 on the March 2015 Critical Reading section and I want to improve it to a 620-650 range on the upcoming June test and I got the Insider’s Essential Guide to SAT CR and Vocab by Larry Krieger and I’ve been study vocab from there and I’ve been practicing timed SAT CR Sections from the The Princeton Review 11 Practice Test what else do you recommend? Your help is greatly appreciated.
@Eenrique710 , good to hear that! Keep on practicing and I have confidence that you will continue to improve on the CR passages! Let me know if you have further questions, and have a good day!
@kaleido , I recommend using the blue book first and foremost. You may also use the online Collegeboard SAT course which has more official past exams for practice. I have also used Kaplan and Princeton Review, and there are other useful practice books out there to be used. Good luck, and let me know if you have further questions! Have a good one!
@sIronMan , I have sent you a private message regarding your questions. Hope it helps! Have a good one!
“@Eenrique710 , I would advise spending most of your time on the critical reading section (40-30-30 if you want to focus more on CR).”
What does the 40-30-30 mean ?
Hey! I followed your advice, and I got a 690 on my May SAT! Now that I’m on the brink of the 700 barrier, what could I do to push my score up even higher?
40-30-30 was my reference to spending 40% of the time on practicing CR and 30% on Math and Writing respectively since @Eenrique710 wanted to improve all sections but also focus more on CR. It was a suggestion to just focus more on critical reading.
Hey@Apoc314, I find that I am getting most of the Vocab questions on the SAT CR wrong as I do not know 70% of the words on there. I was wondering if you have any specific tips for learning Vocab? I am currently a sophomore in high school and plan to take the old SAT this December or January(has writing and math sections, which I do ok 700-800), but I only score in the low to mid 500’s for reading due mostly to vocab. I am very busy during the school year but will have this entire summer dedicated to SAT practice; I will also be taking a Princeton Ultimate Review Course. Do you think I have a chance of getting a 700-800 on this section too? I also look forward to using your passage reading tips as soon as summer begins!
