I took the October 2013 SAT, and I think I bombed the critical reading questions…the passages were so confusing and the questions a little difficult…it was a little hard to use devil’s advocate since the evidence was not direct to me…any tips you can give me, Apoc?

Wow, how awesome!! That’s a really great guide you wrote down. So practical and intuitive. Thanks so much!

eagle4022, depending on how you did on the critical reading, you may need to just start by practicing the reading comprehension passages without a strict time limit at first to improve your question answering before you add in the time limit. It seems that you just need to practice more so the reading comprehension will feel like second nature and you will be able to see the evidence more directly and use devil’s advocate more effectively. Believe me, it takes quite a lot of practice depending on the person to be able to understand how to answer those questions well and quickly. I’m sure you can improve with some more practice (you don’t have to just use the blue book - Kaplan, Princeton Review, and other books provide similar enough starting material. I saved the blue book for my last few weeks before I took the SAT so I would have the most relevant and useful information). I hope this helps you out!

Congrats and thank you!!

how much time do you guys spend on eliminating answer choices average?

please i need your help how did you improve your score from 520 to 6oos

“Want to know how I got an 800 in CR? I never studied, but I did read A LOT growing up. It’s really not that hard if you actually know the English language.”

I’m not sure if that’s more arrogant or obnoxious AeroMike. Its certainly not helpful.

chresy, I am not exactly sure what the best strategy is to improve from 520 to the 600s, but I wouldn’t focus on vocabulary as much as the overall reading comprehension and critical reading passages. However, it really depends on what you’re losing the most points on. But I wouldn’t advise memorizing a ton of vocabulary at this point, but completing practice tests (you don’t have to do these timed yet if that’s an issue) to gain understanding of why some answers are correct versus others. If anyone else has some advice to add, please feel free to help out!

I’ve never really studied for the SAT, and I’ve realized that I have to. I got a 640 on the Critical Reading Section in October, so I’m hoping for a massive improvement going into the December test. Going to use this and just take practice tests for the next month and hope to raise my score to 730. Praying to the lord that it happens. That, and raise my Writing score to 770.

Good luck, Enleigh! I hope you do well on the SAT in December!

Hope the SAT went well for everyone today!

i want know you secret

Thanks for the tips! I’ve gotten to the point where I miss about 6-7 questions on the CR portion (vocab and comprehension), and I’ve noticed that a lot of times the CR questions I miss are the one’s that I narrowed it down to 50/50. Hopefully the Devil’s Advocate method will help! Do you have any further advice for this method?

Hi, ankwen. It seems that you’re well on your way to scoring an 800 on the critical reading section. When I was studying for the SAT, I was at a point where I missed 5-8 critical reading questions, and I just had to keep on practicing by refining the Devil’s Advocate method through questions and learning to become more efficient and accurate. At this point, I just recommend continuing to practice as you have been and keep in mind the method and focus. Good luck!

I am having some problems with the long passages in critical reading section. My practice exams scores are poor and I can not cope up with the time allotted for. Need some techniques.

Hi, JAMIL132448. You might want to start by going through the critical reading passages more slowly and without a strict time limit and really focus on understanding how to answer the questions correctly (and really understanding why you answered some questions wrongly). Starting off by building these skills will help your foundation, so then you can eventually work on improving your efficiency to meet the time limit. Another tip for long passages are to look at the questions first before reading the passage then underlining the relevant portions. Good luck!

May I ask what was your overall SAT score? CR+Math+writing

Hello Apoc314,

I’m troubled with 2 longer PAIRED passages, often either facing time management issues or getting out of track and scoring even as low as 5 of 19. I’m appearing in 2 weeks time, plz need yr help, and plz devise a little detailed time management strategy, i.e if 14 mins for 12 Qs(mainly Q 7-19 of last section), then how much to spend on Qs on either passages, and Q on both.

Right now, I’m applying yr strategy 4 rest. Managing low 600+ now, but hopeto target 700+ . Any extra-ordinary tip…?

I’m just focusing fully on SAT 4 these days,
