For those of you preparing for the upcoming September ACT, I thought I would bring back this thread.
Hi. I took the ACT in June and got a 30 (lower than expected). My score was lowered because I got a 28 on the readingā¦ I didnāt finish the last four questions of the section. Iāve been practicing a lot, but should I read the entire passage (with my pencil) or should I skim? My concern is that Iāll spend more time reading the entire passage w/the pencil method than skimming.
The tip for reading is excellent. I usually get so tired of reading the passage and just blank out on what I read, but moving along with the pencil (Iāve heard this so many times in elementary school lol) helps a lot. Unfortunately even though I got one more question right on a particular reading section I just took, the curve skipped the 33 and got the same 32 lol. Hopefully the curve is with me in September and I improve with this method
@tt8082 Hello! Having taken the ACT twice now, I can honestly tell you that methods work different for different people. That being said, I attempted the skimming method on my first ACT (where I scored 28 on the reading section), and was not even able to finish the last passage from the time wasted scanning passages for answers. The pencil method, on the other hand, allows you to take in all of the information and I seldom had to look back at a passage for an answer. On the occasions where I did have to look back, I knew exactly where to look and wasted no time doing so. If I were you, I would take two practice tests and try out both strategies. Whichever one you feel more comfortable with is the one Iād recommend! Best of luck!
