how impacted are the majors at ucsd??

i got into my alternative major and im wondering how hard is it to switch into majors that are impacted? i want to switch into biochemistry. and if biochemistry doesnt suit me, how hard is it to switch into engineering majors? do you need like a certain gpa to get into those certain majors? ive been trying to decide between UCSD and UCI and i know UCSD is great for what i plan to major, but if its pretty hard to get into, UCI seems to be in favor of me since I wont have to deal with such issues...

I’m assuming the impacted major you’re intending to go into is biochem and cell biology? Or is it biochem and chem?

For the department of biology (biochem and cell biology major) in order to get into the impacted major you need to take all the course pre-reqs and maintain a high cumulative GPA. They admit based on that cumulative GPA (basically the pre-reqs AND your GEs/Writing classes) and available space.

they don’t take many transfers into impacted majors. You have to have the highest GPA out of all hopefuls trying to switch into that major basically.

For engineering, mechE, aeroE, and bioE are all impacted.

What’s the projected cut-off score for freshmen applying to an impacted major? If regular admissions is in the high 7000’s (I guess 7700-7999ish?), then what would be the cut off for impacted majors?

Hey ash, 3.7 is the rumored “in” GPA.

I got into an impacted major (microbiology) with somewhere between 8150-8300, of course that doesn’t mean that is the minimum.

However i’m switching to electrical engineering, so all you people trying to transfer into bio should thank me for leaving!! hahaha

Before coming to UCSD and hoping to transfer into bio, come up with a good backup plan, because theres a high chance you won’t get in. (not saying you won’t, but the odds are against you)

hope it helps

i was hoping to get into biochem and cell biology. i want to major in something that i know i will like to do in the future and to prepare for med school. what do you need to have in order to get into something like biochem and cell bio? and if the odds are against me, should i go to uci since i would have a easier time switching majors? i dont want to go through all the trouble of impacted majors…

Is Chemistry (Just Chem, not Biochem) an impacted major?
I’m currently undeclared-physical science…

all bio majors, and the aerospace and mechanical engineering majors will be impacted for the 2010-2011 academic year
chem majors are not

Keep in mind that a major in biosci is not required for medical school. You can major in practically anything you want. If I were in your position, I’d snap up the UCI offer since I would only want to do a biosci major, but if you’re fine with other majors, then stick with UCSD.

What is the process that you have to go in order to switch. im a biophysics major and im thinking about switching to microbio and im in revelle, i understand that its hard, but what are the steps I need to take in order to actually change?

You have to fill out an application in order to switch into biology. You must also meet the following conditions:

(1) completed at least one year/three quarters in residence at UCSD;
(2) have completed all lower division requirements for the requested major
(3) students will be ranked based on overall UCSD GPA and admitted according to rank;
(4) students who have completed more than six full quarters at UCSD, i.e., students who apply later than the final day of their sixth academic quarter at UCSD will not be considered.

The college you are in “revelle”? has no impact on any potential change of majors. But, since there is no undergrad biophysics major (BioEngineering maybe?), then I’m at a loss to comment. Semantics asside, I DO recommend getting away from undergrad ‘BioEngineering’ however. It is one of those majors going in THREE directions at once, and therefore, at the undergrad level, prepares one for absolutely NOTHING. It’s kind of an ‘intro’ to biochemistry, nanotechnology, and bioinformatics… and does nothing well.

Tattersalad: The major OP means is Physics with emphasis in biophysics. You’re right, there is no pure biophysics undergrad major. Also, I agree with what you said about undergrad bioengineering being a bad choice. It’s funny how a lot of people are flocking to BioE because it’s the new “hot” major. It’s funnier when you see how many of the BioE’s are trying to get into medical school haha. Have fun keeping the GPA above 3.8…
