When I was at my school's college fair, I asked a few colleges (ie NYU) if AP scores were important, and they said "just for class placement". Are AP scores also taken into a lot of consideration during the college admissions process?
Also, would taking a "low" # of AP classes be disadvantageous in the college admissions process? I'm taking 2 this year, and most of my smart friends are taking 3 or 4. (I also took an AP last year though, so I actually have 3 in total)

Are AP scores also taken into a lot of consideration during the college admissions process?

Considered, not weighed heavily.

I got into all the Ivies I applied to…and I “only” took 6 AP’s by the end of my junior year. Relatively low compared to my classmates. Just make sure you score well on the AP’s. Quality>Quantity

In most cases, AP classes are important if you want to show that you took the most rigorous courseload possible-- this varies from school to school. AP scores aren’t really; you can list them on Common App but you never actually send in a score report until you choose which school to go to.

okay thanks for the info guys
@Icedcoffeee wow congrats on your acceptances!

AP scores are practically meaningless in college admissions. However, it is important to take the most rigorous schedule possible, which often includes taking AP classes

Just out of curiosity, if AP scores are meaningless in terms of admission, why do people still freak out/study so much for them?

You can get credit in college which in turn allows you to opt out of a required class.

AP scores are not meaningless in the college applications process. While low scoring students are not downgraded for choosing not to turn them in, high scoring students can use a good AP score to offset a lower score in an SAT II subject. For example, a 5 in Calculus b/c can assist in offseting a lower score in the SAT Math 2. In addition, some colleges like NYU will now permit three AP exam scores to substitute for SAT scores.

Do you think a 5 on AP eng language can offset a low grade on SAT 2 lit?
