Hello, I am a rising Senior and I was wondering a few things about awards/honors:

1) About how important are they in college applications?

2) Is any award a good award?

3) Are awards that are won consecutively and annually two separate awards or can they be mashed into one award ie. Best Sophmore Orchestra Member, Best Junior Orchestra Member

4) Define an "Honor"

Thank you for your time!

I think awards/honors are equally important as your ECs but less important than your GPA and recommendations. They just serve to show your talent and ability in certain areas.
There is no such thing like ‘good’ award. But national awards or awards that are related to your future major will definitely make the college notices you.
I’ll just leave 3) and 4) to others 'cause I don’t really know the answers. BTW I’m a rising senior too;)

Thanks! Go Class of 2014!

Im gonna agree. Awards i guess are a way to figure out what ur good at, it shows what ur passionate about. And thats what colleges are about these days, passion.

They are far from a must have, but they can show dedication to ECs and can help you to stand out if the awards are prestigious enough.
