Will leadership and passion compensate for the lack of awards? (I dont have any nationally recoginized awards)

same here!!!

I was curious about that too. somebody kno???

Hopefully it will compensate

bump please

i dunno, i always thought leadership positions like being pres etc. is the same as getting an award in the ec. i guess its best to have both though.

Same question here, I probably won't have much/anything to put in the "award" section of the app.

From my experience, national awards aren't a necesity, but local and perhaps state awards of some significance atleast are beneficial.
Anyways, unsung heroes are the best, right?

meh my leadership positions have won recognition... but for the organization, not for myself personally.

in my eyes, that would make them even better. I'm not an admissions officer, though. Did you elaborate anywhere about your contributions?

well ya, i founded the organization ;)

Depends how you quantify the "passion" part. Keep in mind, if you want to be as assured as possible, you want to get at least one or two national awards because this is Harvard, where it's a choice between the olympic gold medalist with the high GPA or the revolutionary physicist with a sob story about coming from Russia. I'm exaggerating, of course, but it's true.

so it wont really detract from my chances if i dont have any "major" awards then?

i dont think so. kinda lame with nationals though, i had a killer forensics presentation (speech) and i got a gold at state, but that was it, there were no nationals so there was nowhere for me to go afterwards.

also, i hate it when you dont get awards for clubs, im in mock trial and there are no individual awards, i spend a lot of time doing it, but since i dont have any awards, a person who won a popularity contest and got elected as an officer in some club has a better thing to put down. (of course ive been elected pres of a few clubs so i shouldnt make fun of officers too much ;)
