How important are CR and writing sections on the SAT for a math major?

(10 chars)

You are not a math major yet at the time you apply, you will have to take courses outside your major and even math majors should be able to communicate effectively.

So, your CR and writing scores will not be seen as critically as if you would apply as a prospective English major, but they will still carry some weight. More for the "average" math major applicant and less for the international award winning math major applicant.
Rule of thumb: anything below the 25th percentile CR score of the college you are applying to is too low unless your application contains some very convincing "items" (e.g. prestigious awards; being a recruited athlete, a legacy or a URM).
