How important are EC's with good stats?

I'm currently a junior, and I played tennis my freshman and sophmore years, but I won't be able to this year because I dislocated my shoulder. I've also been involved in Model UN, and will continue that through high school, I'm also trying to start a Curling Club, and hope to have that up and running before the end of this year. I've done a small amount of community service, and will probably have about 50 hours by the end of this school year.

After browsing college confidential for some time, people always seem to harp on EC's, my question is, how many more EC's will I need to get into higher level schools, for instance, University of Chicago, if my stats are as follows after my junior year:

GPA 4.84 (weighted), 4 (unweighted)
SAT: 2300

AP's taken: Environmental Geoscience, BC Calc, US History
Plan on taking Calc 3 at local CC during summer,
Senior Schedule: AP Spanish, AP Physics, AP Stats, AP Java, English, IR, Health

^

bumping

Since you can’t play tennis now, why not do something else that your dislocated shoulder doesn’t interfere with?

Your unweighted GPA is indeed impressive, as is your SAT, but unless you go to some crazy competitive HS, it’s not particularly impressive. Many students going to subpar high schools can get extremely high GPAs so you cannot rely solely on SAT and GPA to get in. That said, you’re bound to get into some great schools with those numbers.

For Chicago, ECs are actually weighted less than the essay, so I’m not sure if that’s the best example of a college here.

Thanks for the replies. I’m not sure how my high school ranks, I go to school in a suburb south of Pittsburgh, all I could find as far as high school performance was that in 2006 we ranked fourth in the Pennsylvania for SAT scores of public schools.

Porschedude- EC’s matter because they give a PICTURE of who you are. The goal of a college is to create a balanced student body, and your EC’s are how they discern students out.

Do not worry about having massive EC’s, instead reflect on who you are and how you want to look to college admissions. For example, I had a passion for math all 4 years of high-school. For my awards I put my 5 math nationals awards, I was math team president, got a recommendation letter from my math team coach, took tough math classes, and chose my major as math. It showed a distinct passion. I did not have much other EC’s though.

I am sure you can figure it out and do the same. Good luck!
