how important are extracurricular activites?

I was wondering if I have enough : I participated in karate club freshman and junior year (I couldn't sophomore year because I was injured) I plan to participate in it senior year also. I am a mentor for children in 2 different programs. I play a sport at my high school and a different team when the high school season ends. I do community service at a church and lastly I am student ambassador. It is my junior year though and I am questioning whether I am involved enough.

its better to have few ec but you should show your devotion and dedication toward them, you have to show your best on them and be on the leadership position.just work on the things your on now.you can add few more but always remember they don’t see breadth they see depth. So just do what you love and show your best on them.

Generally only the very top schools care about ECs. Most others don’t or weight them very little.

Erin’s Dad is right. But I would say get a few and keep them.

The question about impressive ECs comes up regularly on the forum. There is a thread with several posts by Northstarmom, a Ivy alum interviewer, about what constitutes impressive ECs from the point of view of the most selective colleges. The post is at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/210497-those-ecs-weak-so-what-s-good.html

2 very interesting articles about ECs that stand out and how to get them (same author, different examples) are at [How to Be Impressive](The Art of Activity Innovation: How to Be Impressive Without an Impressive Amount of Work - Cal Newport) and [Save This Grind?](Case Study: How Could We Save This Ridiculously Overloaded Grind? - Cal Newport) While I don’t agree with everything in them, take a look at these 2 articles and I think you’ll get some original ideas.

Northstarmom is an alum interviewer, not an adcom, not a reviewer.

I think ECs make you a unique individual . They help you stand out from the others . My D worked as a volunteer on a farm in Sweden for 2 years before college . She was interested in sustainable agriculture . The summer before that , she babysat for a family in Spain to improve her Spanish . One of the girls she roomed with last year had a passion for horses . Another was ranked on the Junior Professional circuit in golf . Just some ideas for you .
