How important are extracurriculars?

For an Engineering applicant like myself, how important are extracurriculars?
So far I have 780 in math and Physics (Subjects) and I'm awaiting the results of my ACT.
My ECs, however, are very average, but diligently done.
How deal breaking are Extracurriculars?

Two things.

You have to be able to demonstrate that you are a social animal - unless you are really brilliant. You sound right up there so if I were you I would make sure you are involved in working with a bunch of people. A bench scientist can be brilliant of course, but you need to be able to show you can work others.

Also, I would say you should balance your science in math by reading a bunch of histories or fiction that shows you do have knowledge of the humanities. Tell them the last dozen books you have read and be able to talk about them. You would have a killer app that way.

Extracurriculars only matter at certain colleges.
Therefore: what colleges are you aiming for and what are your safeties?

In that manner, my ECs involve MUN (I was incharge of my school MUN team, and I’ve also won 3 awards), Debate (won one) and I’m also part of an initiative wherein a group of friends and I raise money for a local orphanage.

MYO
I’m looking at Umich, Georgia tech, UIUC and UCB as target/reach
Purdue and Rennslaer as safeties.

Look at the Common Data Set of each, section C7, to see the weight ECs get. Also check the net price calculator on each school’s web site to see if you can afford them.
