how important are first quarter grades?

Do most colleges see first quarter grades? I know top schools say they count, but just how much?

I had a decently strong GPA through high school but my first quarter senior grades are much stronger (i have a slight upward trend, 3 B's in freshman year and gone down to 1 in soph and 1.5 in junior from a B in a semester class) I think I'm getting straight A's in first quarter but i'm just curious if colleges will take that into consideration as much as i'm hoping they will :P

Depends: some colleges with early action or early decision request quarter grades mainly to see courses taken and that no drop in GPA is occurring. However, many with EA or ED do not request them and use only grades through junior year. Other than that situation quarter grades are mostly irrelevant. Many colleges use only through junior year grades for admission. Many others, who make regular admission decisions in late Feb to early April, require end of semester grades, meaning your quarter grades really don't mean anything except as they reflect upon final grade for the semester.

While it might depend on the school, most ED and EA will say in the letters they expect you to continue on your current track and most will get mid-year senior grades, in the end you final transcript goes so they have an out if you fail.

As for applications that are RD, improvement has got to help and those should count. I would have them sent, it could be the difference in a close decision between you and someone else.
