How important are foreign languages for college?

I'm a freshman in Spanish 2 and I absolutely hate the teacher. There's only two Spanish teachers, so I'll have a 50/50 chance of getting her each year. But I understand that it's in my best interest to continue on and I guess I will. :'( But for next year I'll have to put Spanish on pause because I'm required to take a fine and practical art sophomore year and I also want to take Comp Sci 1 this year, so I'll have time to take 2 and 3 during my junior and senior year. They're also going to open up some Korean classes starting in my junior year and if I don't continue on with Spanish my mom will definitely make me take Korean. I think Korean will be more useful for me though because that's the language my family speaks and I embarrassingly can't xD. But it won't look good for colleges right? Would it be better to continue with Spanish?

btw I'm planning to major in Comp Sci ;p

shameless bump ;P

If you only intend on taking a language during your freshmen, junior, and senior year, you might want to take Spanish for those three years. A lot of colleges like to see three years of a language. But if you’d rather take Korean, I think you could do that and then mention to the colleges that you wanted to take it since your family speaks it. I think the whole thing about foreign languages for college is slightly overrated. As long as the other parts of your resume are strong, languages really aren’t a big deal. Just make sure you have some.

Important, but not essential.

I’d keep going on with Spanish. I’ve had the same teacher for two years and have learned absolutely nothing. Next year I’ll be taking Spanish 4 as a senior and the teacher already knows that she’s going to have to lower the difficulty level of the class because the bulk of the kids taking it will barely know enough Spanish to get by. But, most selective colleges want to see 3 or more years of the same language. I’d keep going with it if I were you.

You said that there are two teachers that teach Spanish at your school … is it not possible to ask your guidance counselor if next year you could have the other teacher?

It depends on where you want to apply. Some schools even require near fluency in a foreign language. It seems like a more practical thing to keep Spanish, maybe you could take Korean in addition to Spanish? As an elective?

About the teacher situation: You could request the other teacher, just make sure to say it’s because you’ve heard such great things about her/him and you really want to be in his/her section. DON’T say it’s because you don’t like the other one.
