how important are freshman grades?

Title asks the question. Say if someone had a 2.8 for freshman year in independent study then transferred to a public school and recieved a 4.0 for the next three years. What would the chances be for ivies and UC's?

Bad.

Decent at Stanford, I believe. I'm pretty sure they don't look at freshman year.

Princeton also doesn't look at freshman year grades.

Would the switch in schools help? The sign of improvement would help also correct? I have an excuse for the freshman grades saying the online program was flawed and often made mistakes in the grading. Would this help?

UC's see the grades but don't calculate it in GPA right?

Sorry for all of the questions but I have been freaking out.
