How important are grades, really?

So I just received my final report card of junior year, and I got all As and then a B+ in Spanish 4. I calculated my overall GPA and I still have a 3.9 unweighted GPA and 4.29 weighted. In the past I have gotten all As except for a B+ in Honors Bio, and A-s in Geometry Honors, Algebra 2 Honors, and Spanish 3. I've always taken the most rigorous courses possible, will this B+ in Spanish totally tank my application for competitive schools?

Grades are important, but two B grades with everything else A grades in the most demanding course selections available to you won’t disqualify you from any US university.

But for the most selective US universities, you also need high test scores and a high level of achievement, award, and/or recognition in extracurricular activities, in addition to high grades in the most demanding course selections available to you.

I think you’re being a bit overdramatic haha. If your overall application is VERY STRONG then a couple of B+'s won’t hurt you.

No, a couple B+'s won’t hurt you, but are you really taking the most rigourous courses? Do you have APs available to you and have you taken several? If you took Algebra and Geometry as Junior, I wouldn’t think that is the highest available.

I took Algebra 1 HN in 8th grade, Geometry HN in 9th, Algebra 2 HN in 10th, and Precalc/Trig HN this past year (11th). By graduation I will have taken 10 APs- 1 in 10th, 4 in 11th, and I am scheduled to take 5 next year. My ACT score is a 32, and I have a variety of ECs.

There’s no need to take 5 APs senior year. 7 or 8 total APs will do the trick. 5 APs can kill your GPA and make your last year in high school miserable.

You’re in good shape for many schools below the ivy/near ivys. Raising your ACT to a 33 would put you in range of some nice merit aid and put schools like WashU and Vandy into the running.
