How important are mid-year grades?

I'm just getting really worried about them. My overall GPA is going to go up because more AP's (extra weighting) for Senior year, but I'm going to have a C+ in Calculus for the semester. Is this really going to reflect badly, especially since I am applying to high-tier schools such as Stanford, Northwestern, and Penn? How much weight does a single mid-year grade carry?

They are important. A C+ in calc will hurt your chances at those schools.

There extremely important, no school wants a senior who is slacking. I suggest you get as much help as possible. And bring it up to a B, then again it depends on your major also. If your doing humanities a C+ very close to a B- won’t hurt as much.

some schools look at 7th semester grades as the most important of your high school career. Knowledge is cumulative.

Calculus is critical as well. Rightly or wrongly, many educators consider Calculus as an indicator of how well a student is able to think abstractly.

There is no way around it.

I would advise you to take this new reality and adjust by applying to several schools in the tier below Stanford, NU and Penn so that you increase your chances of admission. Also applly to a couple of Safeties ranked another grouping down… say schools ranked 40-60.

Very important. DunninLA has good advice–you’ll need to lower your expectations.
