How Important Are Midyear Grades?

I was wondering, because I'm applying to mostly top schools and admissions officers stress that midyear grades are important. I was deferred from Dartmouth ED by the way.

Also personally, I think I will have three B's this semester, in AP Physics (Single Period), Honors Molecular Biology, and AP English Literature.

Here are my other courses for the semester (which I expect A's in):

AP Environmental Science
AP Statistics
Honors Forensic Science
Personal Finance

How much would those midyear grades hurt me? My GPA would drop from a 3.77 to 3.74 and my WGPA from 4.49 to 4.47. Also, from my transcript I have a positive trend from first semester grades to second semester grades, so I either stay the same in grades or do better second semester compared to first semester.

same here. i hope they wont look at my midyear grades during their admission process. i mean…my grades aren’t very good. (good enough for not being kicked out of the acceptee pools but not good enough for admission), though I’m taking lots of AP classes this year.

As a note I called the Dartmouth Admissions Office after I got deferred, and the admissions officer specifically said that the midyear report is important, so I’m pretty worried.

If someone doesn’t get my positive trend from first semester grades to second semester grades here’s an example:

First Semester: AAAABBB
Second Semester: AAAAAAB

With whole year classes courses usually (AP Psychology A and AP Psychology B for example)

by semester do you mean quarter? Because after second semester the school year would be over and decisions would be done.

I mean semester, like my semester trends based on freshman, sophomore and junior years.

Colleges won’t see my quarter grades :)

If the admissions officer said it was important. It’s important.

Though I hear some schools, Cornell included, don’t even look at midyear grades.

Midyear reports are only important if they show a large drop in grades.

All right then, I won’t worry about it too much, since my grades are pretty much set anyways (I calculated my chances of getting an A in any of those 3 classes and they’re dismal.)

A large drop in grades will matter. so do you think getting lots of Bs in AP classes (AP Eng Cal BC, Biology and US Government) will hurt? (considering the fact that I did quite well in my AP and Honor class in my junior yr…all As)

Try to be consistent, I think you should get change one of those Bs to an A, so there’s only 1-2 Bs more than what is usual for you. If you can’t, just work harder on other parts of your application. I hope they’ll be understanding.

same boat man, i have 7 AP.IB classes all of them A’s except for 1 B and 1 C (79)

The C is in BC calc… which i didn’t have to take and I didn’t take AB calc before so i am hoping that, they will take hose things into consideration…
