How important are SAT prep classes?

How important is attending SAT prep classes? I'm generally a very good student getting top grades in a top program in high school. However, I've been scoring around 190 on PSAT, and am hoping to get somewhere around 2100 on my SAT.

I was just wondering, will SAT prep classes do much? Especially if I'm the type that's good at self-studying and will be constantly practicing? What do they really teach in those classes anyways, or is it just a waste of money?

Thanks.

(sorry if that sounded bitter, but i really am just curious)

I think you’ll be better off self-studying. I took an SAT class with Kaplan last year and it was a waste of time. I should’ve used the wasted time to self-study. The “methods” we learned there were like plugging in numbers for math. -_- Not exactly worth the 1000 dollars. Plus for some unknown reason when I took the PSAT (before the class), I got a 80 in CR but during and after I took the class, I got mid 600ish on that section. I blame them for messing up my brain. :)

Took one course at Academic Student Internationald and two at the Princeton Review.

The courses themselves give you nothing. They go over things written in their books. But one thing you do get is motivation. If you are motivated enough, save the money; you’ll spend the quarter of that to buy all the necessary books.

I was scoring 199 on my PSATs and I got a 1990 on my first SAT - pretty accurate.
I was also aiming for a 2100 so I took an SAT class and my score went down 10 points.

In all honesty, I think that if you’re already scoring around a 200 on the PSAT, then the classes wont help. Those are really for students who are struggling with basic SAT concepts and are scoring 160 or less.

If you only need help in one or two areas, focus on those.
