Hey guys! So I was wondering how important senior year grades are to USC..So, I didn't get Senioritis but I've been VERY busy with scholarships and college apps that have taken a lot of time out of my studying.
Soooo, as finals are approaching, I wanted to know if having a Weighted 4.0, U/W 3.33 GPA would (majorly) affect me. Unfortunately, I will most likely end up with a C in AP Calculus AB.
My Cumulative GPA is 3.73 W, 3.5 U/W--which is already bad so I'm thinking it'll seriously hurt me. If it helps, my 10-11 Weighted (UC) GPA is 4.0 if that helps, and my SAT score is 2030.
Thanks so much for replying!!

Aghhhh I’ve been going through the same thing with you! Between more extra-currics than ever, harder classes, college apps and yes, some senioritis, my grades have seriously tanked this semester…but alas, USC doesn’t ask everyone for their mid-year report. So let’s just pray that they don’t request ours!

I hear they have as much weight as junior year grades, unfortunately. I’m not sure about USC, but that’s what I heard about other top universities. I’m in the same shoes as you guys. Senior year is soo busy, I just missed an A by like 2% in many of my classes, so my grades pretty much tanked…

It is our understanding the admissions staff looks closely at the UNWEIGHTED GPA.

My senior grades have me worried too. It’s been my worst semester all of high school. My unweighted gpa sits at around a 3.4 I think. I pray they admire my supplement enough to make up for my grades. I believe it also depends on your classes and the major you apply to. I’ve taken many project-based, professional oriented classes and I think those classes might slightly make up for (or show a reason why) my grades that I sacrificed in core classes.

“Generally, for the purposes of admission into USC, we review an applicant’s coursework from grades 9 through 11 for admission into our fall freshman class. We may, however, request 7th semester grades (12th grade, fall semester) before making a final decision. Those students from whom we require 7th semester grades will receive letter requesting this information if we need it, but we encourage all first-year applicants to submit their 7th semester grades when available.”

They primarily look at your freshman through junior grades, but there’s still a high chance they’ll ask for our grades, especially if we’re on the fence.

i’m worried about this too. With the stress of applications and the hardest year of being full IB diploma, my gpa will rest at all A’s with two B’s, in IB pre-calc and likely in English (hardest class at my school). They say that they want to see you can keep the same steady marks you have all of high school into your junior year, which I guess I have (3.7 unweighted accumulative, as well as this year). Still scared :(

As a current student, from my understanding they mostly focus on grades up till junior year.

Thank you everyone for replying. So from what I understand, they may ask you if you’re borderline, which isn’t good b/c I’m pretty sure I’m borderline right now.

@Georgia Girl
Well considering my U/W GPA is bad, this is not good news…

So we don’t have to submit a mid year grade report unless they ask us?

Yeah, I just went to the site and it seemed like they expected applicants to send in a mid-year report. But apparently they only request grades from certain applicants, probably the borderline ones?

senior year grades are only important if you’re borderline on getting in. if they are iffy about you, they’ll ask you to send those grades in and if you had senioritis, and got a 3.5/3.6 gpa instead of your usual 3.8-4.0, your chances aren’t going to be too good.

Just so y’all know, if you are admitted, I’m not sure if this is a whole USC thing or just for scholarship students, but my brother (Viterbi '14) said that USC had a no-C policy (or it might have been a no-below-C policy). I believe he said that was for SECOND semester grades, though. I know it’s not quite what you were asking, but just so everyone remembers to not completely give up second semester Good luck!

Ok thanks so much james and tess! I’m not AS worried I as was before… Also tess, I think it MIGHT be below C, based off of other colleges’ requirements for 2nd semester. Either way, I heard AP Calc at my school gets easier 2nd semester so I think I can get a B.

Oh and James…do you know if that would be your Weighted or U/W GPA? My W GPA will most likely be the same, but I probably will end up with 2 points lower for my U/W…
