How important are sub scores in ACT?

if my score in English is 28-30 but because of other sections my composite gets pulled up, does it really make much of a difference?
Conversely, if I have a high score in English and Math, but because of the other sections my composite is lowered, does it matter a lot?

Schools always want higher composite scores. They always help with merit scholarships and your chances of admission. With that said, it might be good for you to have higher scores that pertain to your major. For example, if you write that your major will be english, english and reading would be better to have high scores in than math and science.
