how important are summer programs

After getting rejected from a summer program that I considered to be a safety, I'm getting kind of nervous for the summer. How important are summer programs for getting into top colleges? Obviously, prestigious programs like TASP and RSI will undoubtedly help an application, but what about the less prestigious programs, such as COSMOS? Do colleges really care at all about the summer programs, or would they prefer that you spent your time doing things that you enjoy that are relevant to your EC's? Any insight is appreciated

“prefer that you spent your time doing things that you enjoy that are relevant to your EC’s”
^That’s what summer programs are for… It all depends on what you’re area of interest is. There are a myriad of things to do in the summer, whether it may be working (a job as a cashier or waiter) or interning (at a company) or volunteering (extensively at a hospital or local charity group), it’s all up to you.

Unless you are in some absurdly selective summer program, it is not the program that matters, but that you had a meaningful summer.
