How important are the essays for the UC application?

<p>Can you get in the top UCs with stats alone (mediocre essays that is)?</p>

<p>Yes you can. The essays are less likely to be a game-changer at the top UCs than the top privates.</p>

<p>Berkeley and UCLA used to admit that some students got in on test scores and GPA alone. I think they still do. </p>

<p>However, why you would not spend extra effort to write a good essay is beyond me.</p>

<p>I disagree. Strong essays are a big plus at Cal and UCLA. The other UCs tend to be more numbers-driven.</p>
