<p>i would say that the essay is as important as the SAT essay. most people tend to write typically good essays for both, so it doesn’t really make a difference, and other factors are more important. but an exceptionally good or bad essay would likely tilt the adcom’s decision.</p>

<p>The essay is used more to get a sense of the applicant, and less to get a sense of their writing ability. So it carries about the same weight as the SAT essay in terms of writing strength (grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc), but much more weight in the overall evaluation. In general, especially in selective schools, an essay can make or break your application as you really need to provide a compelling reason for them to admit you, and the essay is the best spot to do that.</p>
