1.How important are the supplement essays in comparison to grades, sats, etc

How important are those 1000 character mini-essays? Mine have good and honest content, but the small space has made it…a bit choppy/not as well written as a longer essay would be. Is this okay, you think?

I think that for all top schools – Brown especially though – the essays are very very important. Since they get so many conventionally strong applicants, your writing is where you really get a chance to stand out from the pack, to show your personality, to tell them what makes YOU special. Definitely not something to take lightly.

As for the mini-essays, I think those are important as well. That’s how you show Brown that you’re genuinely interested in attending their school and that you have some idea what you want to study.

Maybe if you have amazing grades and a perfect SAT score you can get in with relatively weak essays, but I wouldn’t count on it.

I think as long as the mini-essays are cohesive and express your intent clearly, you’re fine. There’s no need for superfluous creativity or amazing writing there - it is more for their information. Creativity and writing skill, however, are big factors in any larger essay.
