how important are upward/downward trends?

Hi,

I'm a rising senior. I'm wondering how would upward and downward trend affect my chance of college admission. My grades freshman year first semester is 3.64, second semester 3.85; sophomore year both semester is 4.0; junior year I screwed up, with 3.71 first semester, and 3.57 second semester. How would this affect my chance of admission into certain colleges? I'm thinking of applying to University of Minnesota Twin City as safety, UW Madison, Purdue, and maybe Tulane as match, NYU, U of M, and maybe University of Rochester as high match/low reach, and Cornell, Uchicago, and Northwestern as reach

U of Miami is more of a match then a low reach. Your trend probably wont matter at all because you didn’t go in one constant direction up or down. If you did say
3.5 Freshman
3.8 Sophmore
4.0 Junior

That might help a little and if you did
4.0 Freshman
3.8 Sophmore
3.5 Junior

That would hurt a little. So basically, trends in your case most likely won’t affect admissions. Just use your cumulative GPA without worrying about any impact trends would have.

Thanks for the info. So I guess it wouldn’t hurt or help. Thats great I guess
