How important are your academic stats?

GPA, test scores, class rank, etc.

I’m in an early college program. Unweighted GPA: 3.6, ACT: 23, class rank: 1/32, 61 transferable credits (equivalent to an AA/AS).

My ACT score isn’t terrible, but it isn’t something I’m necessarily proud of. From what I’ve read, it’s right on the line between below average and average. I’m terrified that my score will bar me from a good chunk of my schools.

In general, which of your stats do admissions officers pay most attention to, if any?

First GPA, second SAT/ACT score. What level of college are you considering? For top 50 colleges, you are way below average.

Definitely not any prestigious colleges—I accepted early on I wouldn’t get admitted so I didn’t even bother applying. Top are Appalachian State University, Western Carolina, Queens University of Charlotte, East Carolina, Guilford, High Point, and CUNY Queens College.

You can Google Common Data Set and look up section C to see what weight different factors get in admission. You’ll also get the average stats of admitted students to see where you stack up.

You might also consider some of the many excellent test optional colleges. Here is a list sorted by state. https://www.fairtest.org/university/optional/state

Thank you! I had no idea this existed—very helpful.

  1. You can study for, and take the ACT or SAT again
  2. Also look for colleges that will take your Community college credits…typically your state schools
