How important are recommendation letters in the application process? Or to better phrase my question... how are they considered and how important are they as opposed to having (for example) high grades/ high SAT scores/ec's ?

My apologies if this was previously asked.

Thanks!

It varies from school to school. Colleges and universities publish the Common Data Set, which you can probably find by searching around on the college websites, and you can find how important the colleges consider them. Generally they’re secondary to grades and test scores, but they still matter a lot, because colleges are trying to get a holistic sense of you, and your question is kind of like, how important is the foot compared with the arm.
