School is a game designed for those most compliant to follow the beck and call of the administration, and/or those intelligent enough to cheat the system.

You know those kissups who you just want to burn at the stake? They’ve mastered the system.

So no, academic excellence is a piece of ******** and I’m very very tired of it.

Agreed. When I have a B in an Advanced Placement English course – and I’m the only student in the class that managed to get all A’s on the tests and quizzes – because I didn’t want to “draw a picture of my favorite character”, I begin to doubt the correlation between high school and academic excellence.

let me tell you a story from the lore of hsl. many of you probably remember this but if you don’t it bears repeating.

once upon a time there was a girl who was academically successful beyond her wildest dreams. she did competitions and got published in scientific journals and went to caltech on a full scholarship at the age of 16. once she got there she realized there was more to life than academics, and she was so traumatized by that realization that she tried to kill herself a bunch of times and got kicked out of school. now she is emotionally broken and will probably never do good work again. if she hadn’t been so damn excellent in high school she’d probably be able to actually do something.

on the bright side she is so good at math now that everything she shts turns to gold. so she is still better than you even though she spends most of her time lying in bed and reminiscing about her days of glory.

moral: you can win high school, and still fail life. but at least you’ll still know what you learned in high school. and if you do it right that’s worth quite a lot.

^ She went to my school. It’s a shame what happened. She was absolutely brilliant and everyone was overwhelmed with her academic success. However, people who study all the time are in shock when they get to college. In high school, academic excellence is more than just ECs, test scores, grades, etc. It’s also about how well one can balance a social life. I don’t mean they should get fxcked up all the time, but the people who display the grades, test scores, ECs, resume, AND a great social life (with ppl who actually like them and isn’t just a tag-along) are the real people who indicate success in their future.
