How important is a college with no name recognition (in NE)?

I think many people would know Creighton as it is part of the very strong Jesuit group of colleges. If he plans grad school right after college then I can’t imagine it would be any issue. If he hopes to come back to the northeast to work it may be worth speaking with someone at career services at Creighton to get a sense of what firms interview out there.

I think Creighton is a fine school and if it is the fiscally prudent choice as well then absolutely go for it!

Thank you for all of your replies! We are visiting next week and should have a better idea then. The merit package is definitely comparable to some of the closer schools that he has been accepted to, but the non $$ benefits are better, e.g. Dean is his advisor, Honor’s college, etc. My ambivalence re: not sending DS far, far away is unusual for me, because we are typically not insular at all and we encourage them to broaden their horizons (on their own dime!!). I’ll post our impressions of Creighton after accepted student visit next week. Thanks again!

Decision made! Deposit placed! He’s going to be a BlueJay! Creighton University Class of 2021! Loved the campus, the students and the opportunities and support available at this school. Every student that we interacted with is happy to be at Creighton. Many of them have had fantastic research and / or internship opportunities opened up to them, which is always a good thing. Students in upper classes seem really supportive of their younger peers and were open and frank when quizzed by this anxious NE mama! DS loved the intra-mural sports available, dodgeball, volleyball were mentioned, also the office of service and social justice have many, many offerings which interested him. So relieved to finally have a decision and so glad that this school, which was not originally on our radar has met and exceeded our expectations! Thank you all for your responses and good luck with your decisions!

I live in Omaha and Creighton has a very good reputation.Creighton Law is very good. Also, and it’s one of those hard to measure factors is that the kids there are nice kids, strong family support etc.

CONGRATS to you both, @NEMomof4!

My comment is too late to matter, but I have a couple of friends who are Creigton alums. In their 40’s and still rabid Creighton fans with bumper stickers on their cars and drive 3 hours to Omaha for basketball games several times a month during that season. Great reputation with employers, at least in Nebraska and surrounding states. Especially well respected in Omaha area. I think you made a good choice.

I’ve lived in the west, Midwest, and Northeast. From my experience, people on the northeast would give you “the look” even if you said your kid was going to U of Chicago or Michigan–ANYWHERE “out there” is considered by many northeasterners to be suspect and inferior. Basketball legend Red Auerbach used to say “New Yorkers think anything west of the Hudson is camping out”–so this is nothing new.

I have a kid at the U of Nebraska, so I’ve spent a lot of time going through Omaha in recent years…It’s not Paris, but it’s a very pleasant city, with nice people and lots of corporate offices for internships.

Creighton and Providence are in the same sports league, so most people familiar with one will know of the other.
