how important is a five?

I was just wondering how important getting good test scores for ap tests are for admissions. If someone could quickly tell me or give me a link, that'll be awesome.

Not very? Depends?

I don't think it plays that huge of a role. I think it just legitimatizes or explains the score you got in a class. For example, if you got an A+ in a class, but got a 2 on the AP, that sends up a flag about the real difficulty of your course load, whereas a B- with a 5 might explain the "low" grade. But then there's also the argument that some people just have on or off days and that one test can't truly gauge the level of a class.

Let me give you some true life examples!
English Language, 97 UW average, 3 on the AP
Euro, 95 (highest score!), 4
APUSH, 99, 5
Stats, 99, 4
Chem, 96, 4

My scores don't really correlate with my grades, but I still got into my top 2 college choices.

Colleges look at course load more than your actually scores I believe. The admission people I have talked to look for a three at least at most competitive colleges.

Getting a 4 is important for college credit. Getting a 5 is just for bragging rights (rarely more college credit than a 4).

Not to be racist but asians try so hard to get 100 5's because they love the attention.

lol. thats so true.
im asian. so i can say that lol

Sometimes schools ONLY give credit for a 5, for example:
Penn Admissions: Advanced Placement Policy

C'mon be realistic. 99.9% of schools give credit for a 4 and above and 80% of schools give credit for a 3 and above. Citing an Ivy League school really isn't a valid point. What kinda sucky policy doesn't even give elective credit for a 5 on the Govt. AP exam????

^ oregon!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah i mean a 5 looks impresive, but i am sure 4's are not gonna hurt in admissions to top colleges.
A 3 might start raising some eyebrows

Well even a 3 means "Qualified" which isn't too shabby considering these exams cover an entire year's worth of material.

It's worth your LIFE. DUH.

yeah actually a 3 is good and for most colleges will suffice, just that colleges like harvard and other "top" colleges might not be as accepting of a 3.

admissions wise, its not that big of a deal, unless it was a self studied course since they can still see your letter grade in the class (i got a c/b in ap us, but got a 4 on the test...)

credit wise, it matters alot

I'm already accepted to where I want to go and I don't have to submit my AP scores until August when it's too late to reject me :) So I don't care about Macro/Micro exams next thurs. since the teacher really sucked at teaching (but he was fun).

A 5 is displaying you have mastered the subject. Anything less than a 5 indicates you didn't have full mastery. Therefore some colleges like top tier believe its necessary to get a 5, mostly because a 5 is only 70% on the test. Overall though its just about doing the best you can possibly do.

If you are applying to international universities then it definitely matters. For US schools...not so much.

i would say for the schools i applied to (uc's) they did not matter at all. i took 4 ap courses and only passed one of them with a 3, and i still got into ucla

i didn't say anything about admissions, so i guess i really wasn't answering the OP's question.
but i'm just saying sometimes you need a 5 if you want credit at certain places, so take this into consideration if you're applying to a place like UPenn

Utmost importance because my parents said so.

So now I'm screwed for 4/4 exams because I might get 4s on them.

thanks for the replies everyone.

referring to what sungchul said, i think ap's should be placed in the context of everything else. some people just aren't good at taking big tests like ap's, sat's, etc, but they still have the grades. yes, some schools' grades could be inflated, but does that mean the student isn't good at the subject itself?
