How important is a supplemental essay

I know on the Harvard supplement to the common app, it says no additional essays are expected or required. However, is it a good idea to submit a supplemental essay? Or is their statement completely truthful?

Some people submit it and some people do not; people get in both ways. If you can represent something about yourself on the supplemental essay, use it to your advantage.

If there is another aspect of yourself that you think will shed more light on who you are as a person that isn't already represented some other place on your application, then definitely write one. You really want admissions to see your full picture, so the supplemental essay is a tool to achieve that.
