How important is class rank for Cal/UCLA?

Okay my rank is really going to be messed up because of my 4 C's in 4 semesters of PE. I learned today that PE counts for class rank in my school. I have to get straight A's this and next semester just to get into top 10%. So how important is class rank for UCLA/Cal? I have gotten A's on the important classes (english, math, history, science) and so my UC gpa, 10th-11th weighted and unweighted gpa won't be a problem. But would it hurt my chances greatly if I drop down to second decile? I am really ****ed off that I didn't know about this when I was in 9th grade. :( If I do drop to second decile, would colleges see that it was because of PE? Had I got A's in PE like everyone else in my school, my rank would go up at least 5%. :(

I think it depends on the quality of your school. My hs was uberly intense (easily one of top in ca), so the top 30% actually made it into cal/ucla.

my school is very intense as well. I know many get into UCLA/Cal each year, but I don’t know it’s not as high as 30%.

i dont think they look at your class rank during admissions.

you send in your high school transcript after you get accepted

wait what? they don’t look at rank during admissions? How are they suppose to pick who gets in and not then?

how are they suppose to know your grades and course load, if you send in you high school transcript AFTER you get accepted?

If you go to Harvard-Westlake, Monta Vista, Troy, or Lynbrook, well…

Rank doesn’t matter that much for Cal/LA since even ELC only gets ~twice the chance of getting in (and that’s probably just from their GPA, not ELC) than normal applicants. I mean, if they went by rank alone, people would be moving to intercity schools to get rank (which is something I hear people in Texas do o.O)

lol on Flopsy’s comment :p

wait so what chanX said is true?

and so rank doesn’t matter that much?

ELC students have twice the chance? thats still a lot…

no i don’t go to any of the schools you mentioned, flopsy, but my school is pretty competitive nonetheless

For grades and courses, the online application asks you to list there yourself.

I looked up on CB and it says for Berkeley: 99% in top 10th of graduating class

and for LA: 97% in top 10th of graduating class

so second decile = no chance? :(

oh so they get the high school transcript after you get accepted?

According to the common data set, class rank is not considered.

Rank doesn’t matter that much, and you don’t input your PE grades anyway.

regarding transcripts - on the application you list your grades. you send an official transcript after (and if) you get accepted

I don’t know if those schools are considered top notch for CA, however they are definitely above average.
For example, Troy’s regular program is not competitive, only the science magnet program is. I checked Lynbrook’s school catalog and I was not impressed with it. As recently it’s academic index was a 9, it just changed to 10 last year. Same with Monta Vista. The only thing the above schools have is the large Asian population and that usually means high test scores. But you can’t judge a school by that. A school should be judged by the richness of classes that if offers, not just AP classes, the kind of extrac-curriculum activities that it offers to its students. API number is not the only way to determine a high school caliber eventhough many Asian parents do use this as a benchmark.

^
Well… What’s you definition of top-notch? In terms of academics, Monta Vista and Lynbrook are undoubtedly one of top schools in CA. Their API’s were 916 and 912.
I beg to differ. MV offers quite a lot of activities. Their business clubs such as DECA and FBLA are particular strong, and so as their debate team. Every year, they send around 40-50 alone to Berkeley, LA and SD.

Don’t forget Troy’s Science Olympiad team.

We got slaughtered by them during state competitoin…=(

API is based on test scores. Districts with higher income = higher test scores. Standardized testing = not the poor man’s friend.

MrSpam

haha last year was the first year my school was able to get into state finals for science olympiad. we were 2nd to last place
