how important is class rank in admissions?

so i moved states and thus into a new school sophomore year, and somehow it is very difficult for me to be high in rank. (idk the guidance counselors are as helpful as a sack of rocks). my freshman (doesnt count to rank) and sophomore year GPAs were ~3.8. this year, i currently have a 4.0 with 3aps. from what i'm told, senior year doesnt count to the rank that colleges see (sucks considering im taking 5 aps next year). so atm i'm 34 out of 321. idk if i'll be able to make it to 31 or 32 to be in top 10% by the end of the year, i'm talking to rock-brain tomorrow about it but i dont if she'll be able to answer my question. so my question is: how important is class rank in admissions to UNC? i understand that theyre 'holistic', but is being in the top 11% good in their eyes?
sorry for taking so long to explain, thanks in advance

Why don’t your freshman grades count? We had a girl move back to our school after going to Salem Academy for 1 semester her freshman year and taking an honors class not offered to our 9th graders and that made her #1 when she came back. I would call admissions at UNC and ask them about this. Surely, they will need your transcripts from 9th grade and maybe they would figure out your true class rank?? I have been observing the kids who have been accepted to UNC since son was in 9th grade (9 years ago). The rule for our school (2A but heavy on academics and fine arts and sports and have more acceptances than the bigger schools in our county!) is “pretty sure” if top 5%. “Maybe” if top 10% - usually need perfect score on one part of SAT or fly plane across country by yourself or maybe 1st in family to go to college or something that would make you unique. Lower than that, you better be a star athlete playing for the Tar Heels.

well i moved from virginia to pennsylvania and they say that they can’t use freshman grades because they dont know the rigor and academics of my previous school

UNC will be able to figure it out but I would definitely give them a call and ask.

Very important for out-of-state admission. Though less important if you’re a URM.
