How important is class rank in admissions?

I moved between my 9-10th grade year and it really messed up my class ranking. My new school won't retrofit my previous grades so I only have two years of classes for weighted grades vs. three years for other people. Will this screw me over quite a bit or should I get my guidance counselor to note this and everything will be all dandy? Btw my rank is 32/323.

You are still in the top 10%, which is good. The importance of class rank varies depending on which colleges you are applying to. However, if your counselor explains your situation in your recommendation letter you should be fine.

Your problem – is not unique. Many who move have this issue, and the good colleges are aware of it. Having your counselor not this won’t hurt.

Also, if your schools have alumni interviews, you may want to mention this. It’s a good path of getting information before the school that may not fit on an application.

Ok thanks
.

Depends on the school you are applying to.

University of California: rank does not matter; GPA (calculated as specified by the university) matters a lot.

University of Texas: rank matters a lot; GPA does not matter.

Other schools may be in between.

Harvard: class rank “not considered”

Yale: class rank “very important”

Oh wow I didn’t realize there was such variation between schools

BYU: not considered

Harvard won’t consider class rank?

I’ve heard that class rank will replace UW GPA if rank is available. So like, would a 3.85 valedictorian be weaker than a 4.0 salutatorian? (Different schools.)
