How important is class rank to UW?

especially for in-state applicants.

It's hard to say - especially when they don't even require any HS transcript except your final one. So if they are selecting applicants without even a fall semester transcript, how can they even consider class rank, which wouldn't be official until that last semester GPA is figured in?

Not that important. They have gone to a holistic method for the selection of students, where they evaluate everything. There's no longer an automatic admit if you get above a certain score based on GPA and SAT test scores. I was just at a meeting on the UW campus where the UW President spoke, and he said that this freshman class (Fall 06), the first under the new system, has really proved the value of this system. Kids who never would have made it into UW before are accepted and thriving, or at least holding their own. It's the most diverse class ever at UW in all sorts of ways: racially, economically, life experiencially (is that even a word? -- anyway, with diverse life experiences before they get to UW). And they are doing the best academically of any class of freshmen. He didn't give exact numbers on this, but I presume he meant something like overall GPA, or a smaller amount of grade-fade from HS scores.

If you are fretting over being number 2 vs number 1 at your HS, don't worry about it. If you are tied for last place, perhaps you should worry:)

it's 25 out of 400, which seems pretty low to me. my gpa is 3.9 unweighted. how does that look?

If you are saying that only 24 students have a higher ranking than you out of a class of 400, you are in great shape. Top 10% of the class is a great place to be! UW is competitive. but not ridiculously so. UW sounds like it would be a good match college for you. Perhaps you should add a "reach" or two to your mix?

thanks moominmama, so can i ask you if you think i would get in with a:

3.8-3.9ish gpa

20 high school credits from high school classes, about 65 college credits (running start)

2100-2250 sat score

25/400 class rank

pretty lackluster ECs

decent essays

instate

thanks for your opinion

Don't worry, that will almost definitely get you in.

Yes, I think you should be fine. Are you a senior? Keep up with all your classes, and resist senioritis. Even if you are accepted, UW can and will rescind an offer of enrollment if you grades tank in your final semester. That means, slipping down a grade is okay, but getting an F is not.

thanks guys, and i am a junior this year.

andreaaaaa, Keep your eyes on the prize!
