I go to a very competitive high school, so although my weighted GPA is 4.5 as a junior, I'm only ranked 18, and may possibly go down (a significant number of my friends took all AP this year). I'm applying oos and looking for merit scholarships, so I just wanted to know how important class rank is.

Any speculation is appreciated. Thank you.

Well from what I know OOS students are regarded at a much higher level then the In-state students meaning that OOS students, in order to be competitive, must have a solid SAT score usually in the 2000+ range, a solid GPA/class rank, and strong EC’s and essays. In essence OSSS need to have the “all inclusive package” given the fact UNC admits about 18% of its OSS applicants.

So in short to answer your question, although UNC gives a holistic review of its application pool, yes your class rank is quite important. Aim to remain within the top 10% and ensure that your transcript shows rigor. Good luck and best wishes to your application process :)

I can manage 10%. Thank you very much for the help =)

puts a high premium on class rank, and if I recall it correctly, about 80% of all admitted freshmen were ranked in the top 10% of their graduating high school class; JohnBlack probably could tell you more closely what that actual percentage is but I do believe it’s close to 80%. So yes, GPA and class rank do count substantially.
