how about international students?

What if ya come from a school that has the top 2% or so of the state/nation? It's kinda hard to be within the top 10% though we can easily manage in another school (I'm trying to sound terrible or anything :X) Though I'm guessing it still reflects badly if we aren't in the top 10%? Since Penn probably also consists of excellent students, they probably want you to do well anyway, wherever you are, regardless of difficulty?

Is your school a gold medal/silver medal/blue ribbon school? If your public, that's a big thing they look at (or so says my hs counselor).

^^ Yah, but how do you determine if your school is in the top 2 percent in the state/nation, by using U.S. News and Rankings? Remember Penn doesn't care about those rankings, and also remember that schools ranked in the top 100 by u.s. news and rankings don't inculde private schools. Some of those private schools are a lot more compietive than the schols ranked top 100 by u.s. news. Those private schools end up sending around 10-20 percent to ivys.

Just to update some information here:
99% of those students Penn accepted last year were in the top decile of their class. That's pretty crazy.

Where does it say that?

from: Penn: Facts and Figures

98.9 percent of the students admitted for Fall 2008 came from the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class and scored an average of 1,437 on the SAT

what did that SAT number mean... huhhh these numbers seem so wrong

My friend got into early decision to UPenn and he was ranked 39/520 and had a 32 on his ACTs.

Again is this rank weighted or unweighted or either?

The 1437 is out of 1600.

Penn doesn't count the writing section in the SAT. They only use it to make sure that your writing score isn't drastically different from how well your essays are written, indicating parental interference (or that's what they said when I visited them last year).

^^ oh sweet. are you sure? so if i have 750m, 750cr, 650w. penn takes it as 1500?

oh dear...you sure that class ranking is that important as it seems? I might be attending a UWC come august, and the school is open only to scholars...so wouldnt your say its kinda hard to get maybe top 10%??

I'll be glad writing is not counted too :D I got 630 tho 700+ for the other 2.
Yeah :x I have a feeling ranking is pretty important though it doesn't bode too well for me HAHA, the idea I have being that Penn is a very competitive school as it is. If you aren't ranked very well in the school you are in, however competitive, may reflect that you might not do so well in Penn either. Sucks, but I think that's how it works. Though I cross my fingers :D Maybe if your school consists of the countries top 10%, they'll auto put you in top 10% (I'm dreaming)
