How Important is Class Rank?

So I was reading a thread from the UPenn forum and an applicant was talking about the importance of class rank. I have my own class rank issue (13/495) and I was wondering the same thing?

I know my rank isn't bad, but is it too bad for Yale? Does Yale post the average GPA and rank breakdown for accepted students beside just saying the percent in the top 10%.

Sorry to break the trend about non-academic factors at Yale, but I had a question.

Is your school very competitive/private?

I think your rank is fine if you go to a relatively high achieving school known for academic rigor, as opposed to an inner-city public school or something, where the academics aren’t nearly as rigorous.

Well probably somewhere in between it is in a suburban area. It is not like Andover or a really competive public but is just an average school. To put into perspective most top 10% students go to either UT or A&M.
